Bi-weekly? I guess these are bi-weekly now! Have a juicy slice of new music, the usual variety of sub-genre and vibe on these, with some bigger hitters and rising stars alongside the usual 'cool shit I stumbled upon in the depths of bandcamp'. Have at it!
First up! New Spectral Voice! Absolutely amazing Death/Doom, falling into that sweet spot of the genre for me, menacing, cacophonous and utterly horrifying. The mix on this especially really stands out, highlighting every moment and giving things such a grand and grotesque ambience without losing any of it's depth.
New Hulder! The US's rising Black Metal superstar is back with an absolute banger, this time much more polished and symphonic offering at the altar than previous fare. This clicked for me much more than her previous work, and really see why she's gathered so much buzz lately. Rumblings of a EU tour soon, so watch this space!
Ashes in the Huron River by THEOPHONOS
Some Melodic-Blackened-Dissonant-Hardcore(?) outta Detroit, not sure quite where to place it but very compelling stuff! Blackened Hardcore is hard to get right, and this sticks the landing by adding in some really interesting little touches, with harmony and cruelty in equal measure.
Some really cool sci-fi-y Aussie Death Metal that wears its influences on its sleeves. There's shades of Gojira and Mastodon at points here, but done with a clear sense of its own identity. Startlingly well put together for what is (as far as I can tell) a first-time-one-man project IMHO! Well worth a spin!
Some excellent melodic Black outta France, with an album inspired by and dedicated to Jean Jaurès, which is cool as hell, and the music lives up to the standards raised! Small caveat on this one, whilst the current lineup are by all accounts chill, apparently there was to be a member for about 6 years who turned out to be HELLA fash, but left some time ago under unclear circumstances, so YMMV here, just a heads up! I'm mainly sad I can't make a 'Griffon did nothing wrong joke', but the French Scene is gonna French Scene...
