My 50 Favourite Albums of 2025 - Part 1

Yeah, one or two are probably EPs. Sue me!

Having let the year settle for possibly a little too long, I've finally decided to go back and pick out a tranche of my absolute favourite releases, especially the ones that have persisted the most with me into this year.

50.
Death/Sludge
Very cool sci-fi themed Sludge that dips its toe into Hardcore and Death Metal and even a dash of Gojira-flavoured groove at points. A must-listen if you're a Wallowing fan!

49.
Blackened Sludge
A descent into hell, beginning a furious assault and slowing gradually as you fall, crushing you at last into a fine gruel. Lovely stuff!

48.
DSBM
Austere prove once again why they're one of the absolute best DSBM acts out there at the moment.

47.
Death
Just some nasty, ugly, vicious Death Metal. Played slow and low at points but never dipping into Death Doom. Vile. Love it.

46.
Post-Death
A seamless and very cool blend of Post-Punk and Death Metal. A genuinely unique sound, and well worth a spin for the premise alone, but the execution is good it really lends it a surprising amount of gravitas.

45.
OSDM
Some real old school, no fucking around Death Metal. Great atmosphere and pacing, and riffs for days.

44.
Post-Death/Doom
Fascinating and creative instrumental Post-Death/Doom to the point of being borderline Prog at points, full of endless interesting twists and turns.

43.
Sludgy Death/Doom
Four dollops of dripping and disgusting Death Doom to decay and dissolve into. Slow and HEAVY.

42.
Post-Black
Frenetic and dramatic, and peppered with moments of creative flourish, blurring Blackend Crust and Meloblack into its unrelenting demeanor.

41.
BOLT THROWER
For my money, the greatest Bolt Thrower worship money can buy. Love it.

40.
Meloblack
Raw, punky and surprisingly catchy, reminded me at points of older Lamp of Muurmur. Speaking of which!

39.
Black
M is back! Weaving melody, old-school sensibilities and this lovely texture to the mix, LoM still have yet to miss for me.

38.
Sludge
Doomy and Crusty Sludge that takes you on a strange, bleak journey into darkness.

37.
Black/Sludge
Ever wondered what would happen if Conan did Black Metal?

36.
Atmosblack
Beautiful, haunting and melancholy Atmosblack, touching on Blackgaze at points. Not quite as good as their sublime debut S-T, but a worthy follow-up.

35.
Atmosblack
Hugely underrated, melodic and potent with a real in-your-face mix to balance its more contemplative moments.

34.
Blackgaze
I've never been the biggest Deafheaven fan, but this completely won me over. Absolutely sublime Blackgaze, and my favourite work of theirs to date.

33.
Post-Hardcore/Sludge
Conjurer should need no introduction here, but this is really fantastic work of theirs. As emotionally devastating as it is varied and creative.

32.
Death/Drone Sludge
Absolutely suffocating, unrelentingly crushing. One of the heaviest bands on the planet.

31.
Esoteric Disso-Black
ESOCTRILIHUM is always unmistakable, unnerving, inimitable, overwhelming and complex, and I cannot ever get enough. I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of this nearly 2-hour masterpiece.

30.
Black/Death
Came outta nowhere with the worst album cover of the year and absolutely kicked my ass. Sheer Lunacy is the only way to describe this blistering ball of riffs and ferocity.

29.
Post-Sludge
The much-heralded return of Rwake lives up to and surpasses expectations! A must listen if you're a Conjurer fan.

28.
Doom
I've loved TDT for a long time, and their move to a full electric lineup with their last album has now settled into a bleak, almost gothic sound that works heartbreakingly well.

27.
Black/Death
RIFF CITY, POPULATION: YOU. Amazing songwriting and ridiculously catchy. Had the hook from The Locust Scar stuck in my head for days after I first listened.

26.
Avant-Black
Another returning favourite, somehow following up the transcendently good Úpal with something even more experimental and weird. Opening with Blackened Breakcore and closing with Blackened Nu-metal, and every track between weird, wonderful and utterly unpredictable. Love it.

1 January 2025 - Favorite 50 Albums of 2024!

No messing around this year, 50 albums, one list, in an extremely rough order but an order nonetheless! Broadly ranked around simply how much I listened to them, balanced slightly for recency and how much of a mark they left.

30 December 2023: The Seventh Day of Riffmass - BVST OV THV RVST, Magpie's Shiniest Finds and I'm Briging Sax-y Back

All good things must come to an end, and so too must this. On the final day, I'll be highlighting the best-of-the-rest, we'll have a very special Magpie corner for her favourite releases, and THERE SHALL BE SAXOPHONE! I'm sure y'all never doubted me. Big thanks to Craig, El and Adam for their help on it though. Hope at least some folks have enjoyed my frankly ridiculous AOTY lists this year, and see you all in the New Year, I'm taking this Sunday off, I'm sure you're all sick of me by now. Have a good one, and a genuine thank you to everyone who's supported me in doing this weekly blog this year. I hope I've at least connected one or two people with an album they love, and that's good enough for me.

29 December 2023: The Sixth Day of Riffmass - Doom/Sludge/Stoner and Pretty Sure It's Melodeath?

The Sixth Day of Riffmass

THE END APPROACHES! But before then! More Lists! Doom/Sludge/Stoner, and what I'm fairly certain is a Melodeath list! Like, 99% sure it's a Melodeath list. I definitely know what Melodeath is, I don't know why you asked! 98% sure. Enjoyyyyy, and prepare for the Grand Finale tomorrow!

28 December 2023: The Fifth Day of Riffmass - Avantgarde Black Metal and Post-humously Awarded

Another! Another! Two more list-based offerings for the Riff Gods! Today, we're tackling Avant-garde Black Metal and all things Post-Metal, two lists absolutely stuffed with gems. I've been fairly general with the Post-list, so if anyone has strong opinions please send your objections in on a postcard, otherwise, enjoy!

27 December 2023: The Fourth Day of Riffmass - Doom Metal/Death Doom and Death Metal (Weird!)

At it again with a back-to-back banger collection of cacophonous, cruel and chaotic cuts, a double dip of Death and Death Doom delicacies for y'all! The first list is, well, conventional is probably the wrong word, but the relatively more... straightforward drops in the wonderful world of all things Death Metal and Death/Doom, and the second list being roughly tied together by their unique strangeness, the truly odd and more challenging stuff that I found to be oh-so-rewarding this year. Dig in!

26 December 2023: The Third Day of Riffmass - Atmospheric Black Metal/DSBM and Ayyyy, Political Artistic Endeavors

I hope everyone's full of holiday cheer and too much food! I've a perfect pairing of lists for Boxing Day, first, some spectacular Atmospheric Black Metal/DSBM to help you digest real smooth, soothe your hangovers and give whatever activities you've got planned for the day a little kick of ragged melancholy. Next up, if you need the fuel and fire to win any family arguments with that cousin, my favourite politically charged drops of the year to help you keep your flag flying (assuming that flag is red or black).

25 December 2023: The Second Day of Riffmass - Black Metal and Ὁπλίτης

Merry Christmas folks! For the second day of Riffmass, a pair of lists for you, one large, one little, both potent! Today is the turn of the Black Metal and Ὁπλίτης AOTY lists, but fear not! As I have been driven mildly insane by my listening habits this year, I've separated out both Atmospheric Black Metal and Avant-Garde Black Metal into their own lists later this week! You're all welcome, it's a Christmas miracle! (I'm so sorry).

24 December 2023: The First Day of Riffmass - Thrash/Blackened Speed/Blackened Thrash and IN SPAAAAAAAACE

Well, I guess you could say things got a little out of control as I was attempting to compile my Album of the Year list, and I have somehow ended up with thirteen best-of lists, broken down by a series of increasingly ridiculous criteria.

I'll be dropping 2 lists every day until I run out, one conventional, one a little more silly fast-and-loose. These are completely unordered, as I've found it hard enough to narrow each list down to under 10, but I've highlighted what are, in my opinion, the best of the best in bold. Also, each entry only appears on one list, and I've played a little fast-and-loose with genre at times for my own sanity, so consider yourselves forewarned!

The First Day of Riffmass consists of my Thrash/Blackened Speed/Blackened Thrash AOTY list, which is pretty self explanatory, and my IN SPAAAAAAAACE AOTY list, consisting a genre selection of the most cosmic of journeys, albums that span the stars and take you on a journey into the impossible void, where adventure or madness awaits!
